BAGHDAD — American forces freed 42 kidnapped Iraqis — some of whom had been hung from ceilings and tortured for months — in a raid Sunday on an al-Qaida hideout north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

Military officials said the operation, launched on tips from residents, showed that Iraqis in the turbulent Diyala province were turning against Sunni insurgents and beginning to trust U.S. troops.

"The people in Diyala are speaking up against al-Qaida," said Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, the top U.S. military spokesman in Iraq...

"The more contact we have (with) the Iraqi citizens, the more confidence that they develop in us, and in the Iraqi police and the Iraqi army. That leads to greater cooperation from the Iraqi citizenry," said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman.

Some of the men suffered broken bones. Some had been captive for as long as four months. One said he was just 14 years old, Caldwell said.

The 42 freed Iraqis marked the largest number of captives ever found in a single al-Qaida prison, he said.

AP Military Writer Robert Burns contributed to this story from Washington.

Well, at least they were spared the utter barbarity of being made to wear panties on their heads and made to wear dog collars. Surely the poor victims of Abu Ghraib are laughing in mockery...
Or maybe that laughter you hear is the derision of al Qaeda when they see how our media tie themselves in knots to be outraged at our own military and political leaders while ignoring, excusing and equivocating on them.

Yaacov, here we have a situation which, by any objective measure, is at least 1000X worse than "Abu Ghraib"...Yet it receives 1/1000th the media attention...

My friend, remember: it's ALL ABOUT MORALE. Destroying ours, to be specific. :- (

Jewish Odysseus,

You and YBM are men I am so glad are out there and speaking up. YBM's post on deconstruction and the MSM was spot on. I have been plugging away with a Sociology Ph.D. about the total disengaged attitude of academics. It's like they are incapable of making an absolute conclusion as they write about something creepy.

The MSM has the same disease. How can they listen to Gitmo complaints and think it is comparable with what was described in your article?

My current post gives at least one take on MSM disconnect. I'd certainly appreciate a view. :-)

There is a story that Crazy Horse said that "a people can fight no more, when the heart of their women is broken." Well, the heart of the American woman is not broken...let's go get 'em! grrrrrr!

Nancy, thanks for your kind comment! I hope you will honor me with your presence often.

I approach this struggle with the same mindset I approached that w/the Evil Empire, summarized best by the late great Ron Reagan:

"WE WIN, THEY LOSE."

Because the jihadi/sharia phenomenon IS both a religion and a social/cultural organic entity (unlike communism), in some ways it is more difficult to destroy. On the other hand, that concrete organic entity is specifically defined by an Arabian culture and inherent obscurantism so notorious and unpleasant that is really is self-limiting, so long as we correctly define it.

Probably our worst problem has been our inablity to confront precisely the heart of this organism, to wit: ARABIA, at least its barbarian elements.

But I believe the twilight hour is approaching for the charmed life of that bizarre entity we call Saudia, and it will make our struggle much easier when it is behind us.

I have the perfect verse to explain the phenomenon of which you speak-- when Abraham blesses Ishmael:
Genesis 16:12
"He will be a wild donkey of a man,His hand will be against everyone,And everyone's hand will be against him;And he will live to the east of all his brothers."NAS

In fulfillment of scripture, Arabia can't even get along with itself. The only thing that unites it is the everlasting hatred for Israel.

I know there will ultimately be one final assault on Israel, but that with all hearts turned to G--, Jerusalem will be preserved.

You are a watchmen on the tower and I have a Deborah complex. :-)

I will add your link to my blog roll.

Nancy, my only caveat is to remember: even amongst the Arabians there are many decent and courageous people, and we need to constantly keep that in mind.

Our victory over the evil ones CANNOT be accomplished without encouraging and harnessing the positive energies of those courageous individuals. Just as it was internal dissidents who truly destroyed the Bolshevik Empire.

For ~70 years (going back to Ibn Saud and FDR), our approach has been 100% focused on keeping happy some of the most primitive and hyper-aggressive despots on the planet. Those despots, for their own inscrutable reasons, decided they wd prefer to ally with us than others.

That policy may have been defensible during WWII and the Cold War...not in Century 21.

There are many, many factors involved in dismantling this policy, so we have to do it carefully. And after 70 years, A lot of OUR OWN elites have a vested interest in continuing it (Hi, James Baker, YOU PIG!)

But dismantle it we must, and dismantle it we shall. And the greatest beneficiaries of the change will indeed be the heretofore benighted people of Arabia, the children of Ishmael.

Amen to that, dear brother. My husband and I are joining a prayer group to pray for the Arabs in our town.

And James Baker has not been true to his first love. Very sad. Let that be a warning to us all, that we always remember our first love...He will free all the prisoners and wipe every tear from every eye.

As GWB says, all people yearn to be free.

Nancy, who was James Baker's "first love"?! Is there some deep dark Texas secret I don't know, but should?

J.O.

I would hope that back in the deep recesses of J.B.'s mind he could recall sitting in some pew, reciting some catechism and that some vestige of that belief still lingers in his mind....

One hopes and prays.

Nancy, my view is that the Arabians were led astray by their upbringing, surroundings and isolation, so we can't really expect too much of them, and maybe when they're exposed to the Truth they can be saved?

But JB was born and bred in the Lone Star State, went to the finest schools, exposed to ideas from everywhere, so he freely chose his path...So there is LESS chance of him being redeemed than a jihadi.

Sorry.
